It was set up in 2011 with a five-year £20m commitment from EPSRC, Innovate UK and the Welsh Government together with investment from Swansea University and strategic industrial partners. In April 2016, SPECIFIC began phase two of the project with £26m funding from EPSRC, Innovate UK and the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government, as well as further investment from Swansea University, the industrial partners and matched funding from Cardiff University. The company's vision is to transform the world of energy by creating ‘Active Buildings' that can generate, store and release more solar energy than they consume. SPECIFIC’s building concept integrates solar technology into one system – that enables them to generate, store and release their own solar energy – both heat and electricity.
