Nicholson Foundation

The Nicholson Foundation was an independent family foundation based in Newark, New Jersey, established in 1980 by William B. Nicholson and Marion G. Nicholson. Its mission focused on improving the lives of children and families in New Jersey, particularly in underserved urban communities, by addressing inter-generational poverty, strengthening fragile families, and enhancing opportunities. The foundation sought to transform health and human service delivery systems through partnerships with policymakers, stakeholders, and local service providers. By emphasizing systemic reform, it aimed to create sustainable changes that would benefit vulnerable populations across the state. The foundation officially closed its operations on December 31, 2021.

The Department’s priority is improving population health by strengthening New Jersey’s health system. The Department’s five branches, Public Health Services, Health Systems, Integrated Health, Office of Population Health and the Office of Policy and Strategic Planning work collaboratively toward that goal. Population health focuses on keeping healthy New Jerseyans well, preventing those at risk from getting sick, and keeping those with chronic conditions from getting sicker. Population health promotes prevention, wellness and equity in all environments, resulting in a healthy New Jersey.
