International Fund For Agricultural Development

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is a specialized agency of the United Nations, established in 1977 and headquartered in Rome, Italy. Its primary mission is to eliminate poverty and hunger in rural areas of developing countries by enhancing agricultural development. Historically, IFAD has focused on providing financing to sovereign governments, but since September 2019, it has expanded its scope to include private sector investments. This approach supports rural small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), cooperatives, and smallholder farmers, enabling a broader range of projects aimed at increasing productivity, incomes, and food security. Additionally, IFAD promotes climate-smart agricultural practices while seeking to attract more private sector funding to enhance its impact in rural development.
