Students looking to enter the maritime, engineering, emergency management and environmental fields should look into the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts—the second oldest maritime academy in the nation. Unique to the school is its “sea term,” a program conducted in January and February. This program gives aspiring cadets the opportunity to apply their education and training as they sail to ports along the Caribbean Sea. During the approximately 52-day voyage, students will also gain real-world experience in seafaring and ship operations like deck and engine watches, and learn how to properly maintain a vessel. Academics offered at the school include more than five bachelor’s degrees, including Emergency Management, Maritime Engineering, Marine Transportation and more. Two graduate degrees are available in Emergency Management and Facilities Management. The school also offers professional and continuing education courses. In addition to an application, admissions require students to submit official high school transcripts, two letters of recommendation, ACT/SAT test scores and proof of citizenship. Tuition is set lower for Massachusetts residents. Financial aid is determined for students on an individual basis. Students who complete a FAFSA will be considered for financial aid through the form of federal and state grants, loans and institutional scholarships.
