The Associated Press

The Associated Press is one of the largest and trusted sources of independent newsgathering, supplying a steady stream of news to its members, international subscribers, and commercial customers. It is a not-for-profit news cooperative that is owned by American newspaper and broadcast members. It has covered all the major news events of the past 165 years, providing quality, informed reporting of everything from wars and elections to championship games and royal weddings. The Associated Press has been first to tell the world of many of history’s important moments, from the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and the bombing of Pearl Harbor to the fall of the shah of Iran and the death of Pope John Paul. During its early years, The Associated Press delivered news by pigeon, pony express, railroad, steamship, telegraph, and teletype. In 1935, it began sending photographs by wire. A radio network was formed in 1973, and an international video division was added in 1994. Today, it employs the newest technology to collect and distribute content. The Associated Press is in the process of repairing its video and photography content: transitioning to high-definition, expanding its coverage and building a new and flexible infrastructure. It has one of the industry’s most sophisticated digital photo networks; a 24-hour continuously updated online, multimedia news service; a state-of-the-art television news service; and one of the largest radio networks in the U.S. The Associated Press’s commercial digital photo collection is one of the world's largest collections of historical and contemporary imagery. AP Mobile, the Associated Press’s award-winning news app, has been downloaded over 9 million times since its launch in 2008. Since the Pulitzer Prize was established, in 1917, The Associated Press has received 51 Pulitzers, including 31 photo Pulitzers. The Associated Press was founded in 1846 and is headquartered in New York with more than 280 offices worldwide, including every statehouse in the U.S. Most of its staffers are journalists and editors, and The Associated Press has more than 3,700 employees.

Data.world

Venture Round in 2018
data.world makes it easy for everyone—not just the “data people”—to get clear, accurate, fast answers to any business question. Our cloud-native data catalog maps your siloed, distributed data to familiar and consistent business concepts, creating a unified body of knowledge anyone can find, understand, and use. data.world is also home to the world’s largest collaborative data community. It’s where people team up on everything from social bot detection to award-winning data journalism. We use what we learn from this community to improve the enterprise product and vice versa. Our team co-created the Manifesto for Data Practices, the most effective, ethical, and modern approach to data teamwork. More people signed the Manifesto for Data Practices in its first year than signed the Agile Manifesto in its first two years combined. In 2019 DataPractices.org became a Linux Foundation Project. The vendor-neutral community features new, open courseware to help people and organizations improve data practices through inclusion, experimentation, accountability, and impact. We are a Public Benefit Corporation. Most corporations are required to prioritize shareholder returns above all else. Not us. We are legally structured as a Public Benefit Corporation so we can pursue our mission and shareholder value with equal vigor. This ability is rare, powerful, and sustaining.

Samdesk

Convertible Note in 2018
SAM turns unstructured social media into actionable insight and awareness. It also operates a social media management platform for newsrooms. The company allows newsrooms to curate, collaborate, search, annotate, verify, and process around social content, as well as publish and tell stories with social content. When the unexpected occurs, every second count - millions of dollars are often lost in just the first few minutes after an emergency. Having accurate and relevant data on the location and impact of an emergency event as it unfolds is of paramount importance to those in corporate security, public safety, and emergency response. However, obtaining this information using traditional news media and data analysts is expensive, slow, and prone to error. SAM Inc. has developed a novel tool which utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to detect the location of emergency events based on social media chatter. Their proprietary algorithm scans millions of social media posts to detect events such as fire, flooding, tornado, or terrorist attacks, at their earliest stages based on unstructured social media chatter. Following the detection of an event, we use AI and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to verify the source and triangulate location. This information is then provided to decision-makers so they can take appropriate action quickly and monitor the situation as it unfolds in time and space, minimizing the impact on business operations and risk to personnel. When the unexpected happens, every second counts and SAM provides minutes. SAM was founded in 2013 and is headquartered in Edmonton, AB, Canada.
