Chunghwa Telecom, established on July 1, 1996, serves as Taiwan's integrated telecommunications operator, providing a range of services including fixed-line, wireless, and internet and data services. The company operates through various segments, namely Consumer Business, Enterprise Business, International Business, and Others, with the majority of its revenue coming from the Consumer Business. This segment encompasses mobile and fixed-line services, as well as related sales. Originally part of the Directorate General of Telecommunications, Chunghwa Telecom was privatized in 2005 when government ownership fell below 50%. Despite its significant role in the telecommunications market, the company's HiNet internet service has faced criticism for being associated with spam email activities, leading to blocks by various internet service providers.
