The 1772 Foundation
The 1772 Foundation is an independent non-profit organization based in Newport, Rhode Island, dedicated to preserving American historical treasures. Established in 1985, it was named after its first restoration project, Liberty Hall in Union, New Jersey, which was built in 1772. The foundation supports restoration projects and farmland protection across the United States, ensuring the preservation of architectural and cultural history for future generations. Since its inception, the foundation has significantly expanded its impact, growing from a $2.1 million private foundation to one with over $80 million in assets. It has granted more than $50 million for historic preservation efforts nationwide. In response to the Kean family's historical ties to slavery, the foundation is also committed to increasing funding for racial justice and African American history initiatives.
