Hep-Art Medical Devices B.V. is a spin-off from the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam, focused on developing innovative solutions for acute liver failure (ALF) patients. The company's primary product, the AMC-BAL, is a bio-artificial liver system designed to support patients during liver recovery or until a donor liver becomes available. This extracorporeal device functions by treating the patient's plasma and temporarily replacing essential liver functions. Central to the AMC-BAL is a bioreactor that contains embedded liver cells, specifically porcine hepatocytes.
