At International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS) in Newport, Rhode Island, individuals get a real-world boatbuilding education along the school’s coastal location. In IYRS’ Boatbuilding and Restoration program, students learn traditional methods of building and designing a boat. This 20-month program combines classroom academics and theory with hands-on learning. In the hands-on portion of the program, students engage in progressively more advanced boat remodeling projects. The school is located on Rhode Island’s coast. Here, students are immersed in the area’s boating culture. Campus activities include public exhibits, lectures and other events. Students may also visit the school’s affiliate organization, the Museum of Yachting, to see restoration exhibits. In addition to its Newport campus, IYRS operates a campus in Bristol, Rhode Island, which offers a six-month program in Composite Technology. Composite Technology is a building and restoration method used with boats, aircraft and other structures. While IYRS gives preference to those with boating experience, it is not a requirement for admissions. The main steps in the admissions process include submission of an application, a personal statement, letters of recommendation and transcripts or GED scores. Applicants must also interview with an admissions representative. IYRS awards scholarships for outstanding students, women and others. They also offer federal financial aid through Pell grants, federal loans and Rhode Island State grants. Many federal aid programs are need-based. To receive federal aid, applicants must also complete a FAFSA and be a U.S. citizen.
