Founded in 2013, the company has pioneered a minimally invasive, image-guided surgical tool designed for repairing the mitral valve on a beating heart. This technology, developed at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, allows surgeons to perform repairs through a small incision between the ribs, eliminating the need for cardiac arrest or cardiopulmonary bypass. The Harpoon device utilizes a technique that involves inserting neochords to effectively eliminate mitral valve regurgitation. By streamlining the traditional open-heart surgical procedure, which typically lasts 3 to 6 hours, into a more efficient 60-minute operation, Harpoon Medical aims to significantly reduce recovery times, enabling patients to return to their normal activities much sooner. As a subsidiary of Edwards Lifesciences Corporation since 2017, Harpoon Medical continues to work towards transforming the treatment landscape for mitral valve disease.
