A significant portion of its production, about two-thirds, is derived from the Permian Basin, while the company also maintains a substantial presence in the Anadarko, Eagle Ford, and Bakken basins. Founded in 1983, it focuses on the development and exploitation of unconventional resources, primarily from tight-sands and shale formations as well as coalbed methane reserves. WPX Energy operates a significant number of wells, including 688 in the Delaware Basin across Texas and New Mexico, and 404 in the Williston Basin in North Dakota. The company has interests in an additional 787 wells in the Delaware Basin and 104 in the Williston Basin, covering a total of approximately 209,000 net acres. As of the end of 2019, WPX Energy reported proved reserves amounting to 528 million barrels of oil equivalent, underscoring its role in the energy sector.
