Gradient

Series A in 2023
Gradient’s mission is to cool the world by transforming every home to be more comfortable and healthy for the people who inhabit it — without compromising the environment. Today, heating and cooling equipment emits more greenhouse gas emissions than the entire transportation sector, and expansion in the use of cooling is projected to double these emissions in the next 30 years. However, comfortable buildings are critical for health and productivity, especially among communities that are vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Gradient’s vision is a future where everyone has access to comfortable buildings that are fully decarbonized. Our launch product is a direct-to-consumer high-efficiency and low-carbon heat pump.

MicroByre

Venture Round in 2022
MicroByre is a platform for bacterial domestication. Their automated characterization pipeline gathers the oft-overlooked data that highlights unleveraged bacteria that meet functional industrial criteria. That is, they rapidly find the bacteria with naturally unfussy eating habits and evolution-honed metabolisms that have the potential to convert unrefined biomasses into commodity chemicals at vastly improved efficiencies compared to extant fermentation processes. They select from these functionally de-risked bacteria those which can be directly genetically modified to improve their cost profiles — even if they have never been engineered before. The data from our unique characterization pipeline informs the minimally precise genetic modifications necessary to increase pliability and yield, eliminate nutritional additives, maximize feedstock utilization, and improve contamination tolerance & phage resistance. MicroByre gives biomass conversion a truly competitive edge against petrochemical synthesis. MicroByre’s platform bridges the gap between the promising and the profitable in synthetic biology and bioengineering. A unique combination of resources and skills makes MicroByre a valuable potential partner for companies of all sizes and industries. They collaborate to define project scope to match a mutually agreeable business model, which could be a fee for service, license agreement, or joint development agreement.

C2Sense

Series A in 2019
C2Sense is currently working to bring two products to market: Halo Diagnostics, a digitally connected immunoassay reader with a user-friendly hardware and software, provide near-PCR sensitivity to address the gap in the patient-to-provider workflow. The Halo hardware is supported by a cloud-based, HIPAA compliant software solution that provides real-time test results to patients using an app (iOS/Android) or a web portal and, simultaneously, can be shared with a Telehealth physician to expedite time sensitive therapeutic prescriptions. To rapidly scale this technology, C2Sense partners with with immunoassay test manufacturers that own large portfolios of antigen tests that, pre-pandemic, had been exclusively providing tests to hospitals and urgent care facilities. By pairing these tests with a digitally enabled, highly sensitive test readers, remote physicians have access to store and review the same test results their patients are seeing in real time. In conjunction with Halo, C2Sense has designed different sensing solutions to provide product quality information and counterfeit detection from the point of manufacturing out to the customer. Discretely printed onto or included in a product, the tags are safe, versatile molecular additives that instantaneously report valuable information about the status of a good. They identify counterfeits and, where required, they are designed to react to problems encountered in the distribution chain (temperature change, oxygen sensing, and more). The tags are compatible with products as small as a pill, or can coat entire packaging surfaces, enabled by the tags’ compatibility with a myriad of printing and coating techniques.

Liquid X

Venture Round in 2018
Liquid X is an electronic company that enables users to print metal traces and films that deliver results comparable to the bulk metal. The company partners with manufacturers within the electronics industry to develop and print functional components utilized in various devices, including sensors; heating elements; smart textiles, and many others. Liquid X inks are unique because, unlike other metallic conductive inks, their products contain actual metal atoms, not nanoparticles or metal flakes. The processing parameters of Liquid X metallic inks are attractive due to the low conversion temperatures and short processing times. The resulting films or traces exhibit desirable characteristics such as high conductivity, thin and precise features, and excellent adhesion. An advantage of the low temperature processing is the ability to use of a wide range of substrates from fibrous materials such as paper and gauze to flexible, organic material such as plastics. In addition, low viscosity provides the opportunity for the use of a variety of deposition methods such as inkjet, slot die, flexography, offset, and gravure.
