Protektor Lebensversicherungs-AG is the Guarantee Scheme for German life insurers, established to protect policyholders from the repercussions of life insurance company insolvencies. Founded in 2002 by the German Insurance Association, Protektor took over the responsibilities of a statutory guarantee fund in May 2006, which had been created in response to the financial challenges facing the industry. The company ensures that policyholders' contracts are preserved, maintaining pension payments and term coverage, as well as any declared profit shares. Protektor rehabilitates the insurance portfolios of struggling life insurance companies, managing their business until it can be transferred to a solvent insurer. It operates under the oversight of the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority, and is supported by the life insurance companies that are members of the German Insurance Association. While Protektor's primary role is to safeguard policyholders, it does not rehabilitate companies that are already in insolvency.
