AM General
AM General LLC, based in South Bend, Indiana, is a prominent designer, manufacturer, and supplier of specialized vehicles for military and commercial clients worldwide. The company is renowned for its expertise in light tactical vehicles, having produced and sustained over 300,000 units across more than 60 countries. In addition to its military offerings, AM General has a growing commercial division that includes subsidiaries such as General Engine Products, General Transmission Products, and Mobility Ventures, the latter of which produces the MV-1, a vehicle specifically designed for wheelchair users. The company also serves as the exclusive contract manufacturer for Mercedes-Benz in the United States, producing the R-Class vehicle. With over sixty years of experience, AM General is well-equipped to meet the evolving demands of the defense and automotive sectors, supported by a workforce located in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, along with a broad supplier network across 43 states.
VPG is working with General Motors through its on-highway integrator Powertrain Integration LLC. Marketing, technical, and infra-structure logistical support for the CNG model will be provided by Clean Energy Fuels Corp., founded by T. Boone Pickens, both of whom are also investors in VPG. The vehicle will be assembled by AM General LLC, in Mishawaka, Indiana, and will employ a classic front-engine, rear-wheel drive architecture which includes a durable body-on-frame structure. Vehicle access is compliant with the vehicle requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act ("ADA"). The vehicle includes an integrated automatic ramp that will provide quick and easy access for individuals who use wheelchairs, motorized scooters and other mobility devices. Originally introduced as the "Standard Taxi", VPG's vehicle has undergone design and functional enhancements based on input from the marketplace.
