NorthWestern Energy is an investor-owned utility and one of the largest providers of electricity and natural gas in the northwestern United States, serving approximately 668,300 customers across Montana, South Dakota, and Nebraska. Established in 1923, the company operates an extensive electric system that covers two-thirds of Montana, eastern South Dakota, and Yellowstone National Park, reaching 297 communities. Its natural gas system serves 169 communities in the same regions. NorthWestern Energy's operations include the generation, purchase, transmission, and distribution of electricity, as well as the production, purchase, transmission, storage, and distribution of natural gas. The company utilizes a mix of energy sources, including thermal, wind, and hydroelectric power. With a workforce of around 1,400 employees, NorthWestern Energy is headquartered in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, with operational centers in Butte, Montana, and Huron, South Dakota.
