Cineworld Group plc is a prominent cinema operator founded in 1995 and headquartered in Brentford, the United Kingdom. The company operates a diverse portfolio of cinema brands, including Regal, United Artists, Edwards, Cineworld, Picturehouse, Cinema City, Yes Planet, and Rav-Chen, across various international markets such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and several countries in Central and Eastern Europe. As of late 2019, Cineworld managed approximately 9,500 screens in 787 locations. The company is known for offering a unique cinema experience, featuring special formats like IMAX auditoriums, Superscreens, and 4DX, which provides multi-sensory experiences. Cineworld generates revenue primarily through ticket sales as well as food and beverage sales. The company aims to deliver an exceptional movie-watching experience, positioning itself as one of the largest cinema chains globally, particularly following its acquisition of Regal Entertainment Group in 2018.
Empire Cinemas is the largest independently-owned cinema chain in the UK. Currently operating 119 screens in 13 cinemas across the United Kingdom, with our Sutton Surrey site opening winter 2017. Empire Cinemas screens everything from mainstream blockbusters to art-house classics in quality cinemas, staffed by individuals who are knowledgeable and enthusiastic about film.
Cinema City International N.V. is the largest cinema operator in Central and Eastern Europe as well as in Israel and the third largest cinema operator in all of Europe. The Company operates 99 multiplexes with a total of 966 screens.
Picturehouse Cinemas, the UK’s leading independent cinema operator, is a stand-alone entity within Cineworld Group plc, its acquisition having been announced in early December 2012. Formed in 1989, Picturehouse provides cinemas in city-centre locations to serve local communities and offer a broader range of films. Picturehouse now owns and operates 21 cinemas; the most recent openings were the Hackney Picturehouse and Brighton’s Dukes @ Komedia. The company also programmes an additional 36 independently operated venues throughout the UK. Picturehouse draws on more than 18 years’ experience in tailoring diverse and commercially successful programmes, spanning art-house and independent features, world cinema and quality mainstream titles, as well as short films and touring seasons. The company prides itself on being at the forefront of digital cinema and other business and technical developments, such as pioneering a wide variety of live Screen Arts cinecasts of performance arts events, including from the National Theatre, the New York Metropolitan Opera and the Royal Opera House, as well as regular filmmaker Q&As. Sister company Picturehouse Entertainment launched in 2010. Recent releases include BAFTA-winning The Imposter, Shane Meadows’ The Stone Roses: Made of Stone and Ben Wheatley’s A Field in England.
