Founded in 1932, Kay specializes in cleaning, sanitizing and food safety programs and services for the quick service restaurant and food retail service markets. Kay’s customers include some of the world’s largest quick service restaurant chains, fast-casual restaurant chains, supermarkets, mega-retailers, coffeehouses and donut shops. Kay products, programs and services help maintain clean and sanitized kitchens, restrooms, in-store delis, bakeries and butcher shops for a cleaner, safer and healthier customer experience. Kay employs approximately 1,100 people throughout the world including chemical and process engineers, chemists, microbiologists, regulatory specialists, technical account experts, marketing and sales, and support staff. Approximately 500 work at Kay’s Greensboro headquarters and manufacturing facility and approximately 50 employees work at the company’s Winston-Salem distribution center.

Chemlawn has been the target of a two-week-long takeover effort by Waste Management Inc. The lawn-service company, based in Columbus, Ohio, had asked the federal court in Columbus for a preliminary injunction against Waste Management's original offer.
